General Description of the FUNdamentals Stage:

The stage where athletes learn physical literacy; the interrelationship between movement and sport skills.
  • Basic sport skill development in a structured, positive, FUN and social environment.

Psychological Development through Sports:

Athletes develop reasoning skills through various sports and activities:
  • Are FUN, positive, motivating and exploratory to allow for self-discovery
  • Build confidence through a high rate of success and ensure that games focus on participation
  • Promote individual and group participation and maintain a “No Excuses” atmosphere
FUNdamentals PROGRAM FOCUS
  • Introduce basic flexibility exercises
  • Develop speed, power and endurance using activity-based games in a small area
  • Encourage participation in a wide range of sports

 

Learn to Train

General Description of the Learn to Train stage:
This is the period of accelerated learning of coordination and fine motor control and is the critical stage for the acquisition of skills. At this stage participants are developmentally ready to acquire the sports skills that are the cornerstones of all athletic development.

Psychological Development through Sport Specific Skills:

  • Team Spirit; learn how to relate to different groups of peers
  • Development of abilities to concentrate and visualization skills
  • The ability to deliver effort and enjoy the feeling of the effort during the activity
  • The ability to associate joy with effort and competition
  • The ability to take risk and accept failure as a normal occurrence of sport development

 

Train to Train

General Description of the Train to Train stage:
Athletes entering this stage The window of opportunity is accelerated adaptation to aerobic, speed and strength training, and for maximum improvement in skill development.  Technical and fitness training programs should be individualized. While formal competition is included, the focus remains on learning the basics through training, with competition being of secondary importance.

Goals of the Program:

  • Take personal responsibility to bring consistent effort for training, preparation, performance and recovery
  • Learn to accept constructive criticism and work with other coaches or athletes
  • Teach athletes how to communicate effectively with coaches and how to ask for feedback
